The Ebony Fashion Fair began in 1958, and over the next 50 years the traveling fashion show blossomed into an American institution that raised millions for charity and helped Johnson Publishing Company reach audiences.
Show organizers overcame racial prejudice to bring the pinnacle of Europe’s premier fashion to communities that were eager to see, in real time and space, a new vision of black America that was the hallmark of Ebony and Jet magazines. Eunice Johnson took over as producer and director in 1963, and under her direction, the traveling show took on new heights as she expanded her cachet and power within fashion circles.

Museum of Science and Industry:72nd Annual Christmas Around the World & Holidays of Light- Until 1/5/2014
Stroll through beautifully decorated trees while various traditional folk music performances are happening from a wide range of cultures!
“As always, the Museum’s 45-foot Grand Tree takes center stage in the Rotunda with more than 30,000 red, green and white twinkling lights and hundreds of ornaments and trimmings. More than 50 smaller trees are beautifully decorated by volunteers from Chicago’s ethnic communities to represent their various cultures and holiday traditions. This custom began for local families in 1942 as a United Nations Day salute to the Allies during World War II. From a first year featuring only a dozen trees, the annual exhibit has grown into a forest of dazzling trees and homemade displays, created by dedicated volunteers.
Stroll through the trees, enjoy intermittent falling “snow” and savor the performances on the Holiday Stage. School choral groups perform during the week, and … Read More »

Sweets and Wine Pairing. Embrace your sweet tooth. Chocolate. Wine. Seems like a perfect pairing. A power couple, even. But, each can be independently delicious. And, chocolate can be tricky to match. It often likes to stand alone. Wine, though, can be persistent and adventurous in the pairing, with a decadent, delicious flavor sensation. Thus, we will pair the deepest, darkest of chocolate with an array of harmonious wine selections. Sticky and sweet, spicy and raw. We are simply obsessed!
City Winery will pair up with our neighbors at Katherine Anne Confections, pairing some sweet wines with some sweet treats. Don’t worry if you’re not that into sweet wines, the wines will range from sweet to slightly sweet and off-dry wines. The sweet treats will be handcrafted, custom, innovative truffles! Aromas, textures, spice and wine! Bring … Read More »
