7/15- Chicago Downtown Sound: Fatoumata Diawara

Fatoumata Diawara, who was raised in Mali and now lives in Paris, has been receiving rave reviews since her new album’s release in the UK and Europe last year. This summer, she returns to North America for a summer-long tour of the US and Canada and Chicago is on her list! One online review states:

“Diawara uses elements of jazz, pop, and funk along with her ancestral Wassoulou tradition in her songwriting and arrangements, accompanying her voice with rhythmical guitar playing and her own percussion work. Her lyrics touch on such serious and personal subjects as female circumcision, a woman’s right to choose her spouse, and the songwriter’s own painful experience with the African practice of being raised away from her parents.”

She is performing on Monday, July 15th in Grant Park’s concert stage at 6:30 p.m.
